Description
A golden, crispy, deep-fried BLOOMIN ONION that’s crunchy on the outside, tender inside, and perfect for parties or movie nights—this restaurant-style classic is easier than you think to make at home.
Ingredients
1 large sweet onion (Vidalia or Texas 1015 preferred)
1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend)
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
Salt & black pepper to taste
2 eggs (room temperature)
1/2 cup milk or buttermilk
Vegetable oil (for deep frying)
Instructions
1. Cut off ½ inch from the top of the onion and peel it carefully.
2. Place the onion root-side down. Make 12–16 vertical cuts from top to near the root, gently pulling petals apart.
3. In one bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
4. In another bowl, whisk eggs and milk.
5. Dredge onion in flour mix, then egg mix, then flour again. Press coating into petals.
6. Chill coated onion in the fridge for 10 minutes.
7. Heat oil to 375°F and deep-fry onion for 6–8 minutes until golden and crisp.
8. Remove with slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Salt lightly while hot.
Notes
For extra crispiness, add a tablespoon of cornmeal to the flour mix.
Chill onion before cutting for cleaner slices.
Can be prepped and stored in the fridge up to 8 hours before frying.
