Description
A creamy, deeply flavorful French Onion Dip made from scratch with caramelized onions, rich dairy, and warm seasonings. Perfect for parties or elevated snacking.
Ingredients
2 large yellow onions, finely diced
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1.5 cups sour cream (or Greek yogurt for lighter version)
1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Minced chives (optional garnish)
Instructions
1. Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add diced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally for about 45 minutes until deeply golden and soft.
2. Let your onions cool slightly before stirring in the Worcestershire sauce and smoked paprika.
3. In a bowl, blend sour cream and softened cream cheese until smooth using a hand mixer.
4. Fold in the seasoned, cooled onions and mix thoroughly. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
5. Cover and chill for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best flavor.
6. Serve with thick-cut potato chips, crisped pita wedges, or as a topping for grilled proteins.
Notes
For a lighter dip, substitute with Greek yogurt or plant-based dairy alternatives.
Chill overnight for a deeper, mellowed flavor.
Try with raw or roasted veggies for a healthier scoop.
Avoid freezing; it changes the texture.
Customize with add-ins like bacon, roasted garlic, or chipotle for different flavor profiles.
