Ingredients
Unsalted butter or beef drippings – 4 tablespoons
All-purpose flour – 4 tablespoons
Beef broth (low-sodium preferred) – 2 1/2 cups
Soy sauce – 2 teaspoons
Onion or garlic powder (optional) – 1/2 teaspoon
Salt and ground black pepper – To taste
Instructions
1. In a medium saucepan, melt butter (or drippings) over medium heat.
2. Whisk in flour and cook for 3–4 minutes until golden, stirring constantly.
3. Slowly whisk in beef broth to avoid lumps.
4. Add soy sauce and optional spices. Keep whisking.
5. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 4–6 minutes until thickened.
6. Taste and adjust seasoning, especially with black pepper.
Notes
Sub olive oil for dairy-free, or plant-based bouillon for a vegetarian version.
Tamari can replace soy sauce for a gluten-free option.
Great with chicken breast, mushroom Wellington, or cauliflower mash.
Customize with sausage or curry for a fun twist.
