Description
Soulful, sweet, and buttery candied yams rooted in Southern tradition with modern twists like maple syrup, citrus, and optional cayenne heat for extra flavor.
Ingredients
4 large yams (peeled and sliced)
1 stick unsalted butter
½ cup brown sugar
¼ cup maple syrup or honey
1 tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp nutmeg
Pinch of salt
Optional: splash of orange juice or pinch of cayenne
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
2. Peel and slice yams into ½-inch rounds.
3. In a saucepan, melt butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
4. Pour mixture over yams in a greased baking dish and toss gently to coat.
5. Cover with foil and bake for 50 minutes, stirring halfway through.
6. Uncover, baste again, and bake another 15–20 minutes until caramelized.
7. Optional: Broil for 3 minutes for crispier edges.
Notes
For vegan version, use coconut oil and maple syrup.
Leftovers are great caramelized in a skillet for brunch.
Pairs well with roasted chicken, tofu, or kale salad.
