Description
Rich, homemade gravy made in just 15 minutes. Whether poured over mashed potatoes, seared meats, or vegetables, this foolproof gravy recipe brings comfort and depth with pantry ingredients and quick-cook technique.
Ingredients
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups warm beef or chicken broth
½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
½ teaspoon black pepper
Optional: Dash of Soy sauce, a splash of cream, sautéed onions or mushrooms
Instructions
1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter until bubbling gently.
2. Sprinkle in the flour while whisking constantly. Continue whisking for 4–5 minutes until your roux turns golden brown and smells rich.
3. Slowly add warm broth, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
4. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Stir occasionally for about 8 minutes until thickened.
5. Season with salt, pepper, and optional additions like Soy sauce or garlic for deeper flavor.
6. Adjust thickness with more broth if needed. Serve warm.
Notes
Use the 3-2-1 gravy rule: 3 tbsp fat, 2 tbsp flour, 1 cup broth.
Add herbs like rosemary or thyme for aromatic twists.
Make it vegan using olive oil and vegetable broth.
Refrigerates well for 3–4 days; reheat with a splash of water or broth.
