Description
A rustic, quick-bake bread that uses no yeast, combining a crisp golden crust with a dense crumb. Irish soda bread is ideal for beginners and seasoned cooks alike.
Ingredients
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1¾ to 2 cups buttermilk
Optional: ½ cup raisins or currants
Optional: 1 tbsp sugar
Optional: 1 tsp caraway seeds
Instructions
Preheat oven to 425°F. Grease a cast iron or baking sheet.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk gradually. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
Knead 6–8 times on a floured surface to bring it together.
Shape into a round loaf and place on baking surface.
Score the top with an ‘X’ using a serrated knife.
Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden. Tap underside; it should sound hollow.
Cool on a rack for 15 minutes before slicing with a bread knife.
Notes
Use lemon juice + milk if you’re out of buttermilk.
Add sugar and raisins for a sweeter twist.
Savory options include herbs or shredded cheese.
