Description
A Southern-inspired dessert calzone filled with sweet strawberries and creamy filling, baked golden for a flaky, nostalgic treat.
Ingredients
1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade; puff pastry works too)
1 cup hulled, sliced strawberries (fresh preferred, thawed frozen acceptable)
4 oz cream cheese, softened (or substitute mascarpone)
2 tbsp powdered sugar (adjust to taste or swap with honey)
1 tsp vanilla bean (or almond extract)
1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and roll out dough into a 1/4-inch thick circle.
2. Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla bean until smooth.
3. Spread mixture over half the dough, leaving a 3/4-inch border.
4. Top with sliced strawberries.
5. Fold dough over filling and crimp edges with fork.
6. Brush top with beaten egg.
7. Bake on parchment-lined sheet for 18-20 minutes until golden.
8. Cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with powdered sugar or vanilla bean ice cream.
Notes
Add Nutella for a chocolate twist.
Swap in raspberries or peaches for seasonal variation.
Add crushed pistachios for crunch.
Mini versions are great for brunch or parties.
Pairs well with mint, lemon-zested mascarpone, or elderflower drizzle.
