Description
Sweet potato pie is a soulful, Southern classic—a dessert rich in cultural heritage, nostalgia, and warmth. It’s as versatile as it is meaningful, carrying deep ties to Black traditions while being easy and delicious to make.
Ingredients
2 cups mashed roasted sweet potatoes
1 cup evaporated milk
2 eggs
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 prepared 9-inch pie crust
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Roast sweet potatoes until fork-tender, about 45 minutes. Let cool, peel, and mash.
3. In a bowl, whisk mashed sweet potatoes, evaporated milk, eggs, sugar, spices, salt, and vanilla until smooth.
4. Pour filling into pre-baked crust and tap gently to remove air bubbles.
5. Bake for 50–55 minutes until center jiggles slightly but doesn’t ripple.
6. Cool at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Roasting enhances the sweetness of the potatoes.
Try coconut milk for a dairy-free twist.
Add bourbon or orange zest for bold flavors.
Freeze baked pie for up to 3 months; thaw and reheat at 300°F for 20 minutes.
Top with vanilla ice cream, toasted marshmallows, or candied pecans.
